“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Psalm 34:8 NKJV.
Taste, ta’am –Strong’s #2938: to taste, eat; discern, perceive; to evaluate. This verb refers to the testing of good by means of sense of taste. From the primary sense of physical tasting, Ta’am developed into the idea of evaluative sampling of things other than food.
Ta’am as a noun came to refer to “discernment,” that is the capacity to choose and delight in good things. The book of Proverbs speaks of a woman who lacks “taste” (11:2), and a woman with good taste, who “perceives” (ta’am) that her merchandise is of high quality (31:18). This same metaphor of tasting is used in the NT by Peter in calling inquirers to examine the wonders of God (1 Pet. 2:3).
