But I am Poor and Needy.

Let them be turned back because of their shame, who say, as an expression of scorn, “Aha, aha!” Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; and let those who love Your salvation say continually, “Let God be magnified!” But I am poor and needy; make haste to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay. Psalm 70:3-5  NKJV.

poor and needy

Needy, `ebyon, Strong’s # 34: One in need; a destitute, lacking, or poor individual. In the Law, God required that the poor should be treated justly (Ex. 23:6). The prophets strongly denounced those who crush or oppress needy persons (Ezek. 22:29-31; Amos 4:1). God is the protector of the needy (Isa. 25:4).

Jesus noted, “The poor have the gospel preached to them” (Matt. 11:5). Among the earliest groups of Jewish followers of Jesus one such group adopted the name “Ebionites,” that is, “the poor ones.”

They delighted in the fact that their needy state prepared them to see the riches of the gospel and the treasure that is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ ministry was to the poor (*Ps. 69:33) and to prisoners (Luke 4:18).
