What’s in a Name?

He who dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. “I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”

There are nearly forty self-revealing names for God in the Old Testament. In these names, we can grow in the knowledge of God’s nature and character. In just two verses of Psalm 91 three titles of God are given besides the personal name of the Lord (Yahweh, YHVH or four-lettered name in Hebrew. ) Elyon, (the Most High), Shaddai (the Almighty), and Elohim (here meaning “the Sublime God.”)

Almighty, shadday– Strong’s #7706. All powerful; when it appears as ‘El Shadday, it is “God Almighty.” The all-sufficient God; in Him all fullness dwells, and out of His constant fullness His own receive all things. El sets forth God’s Almightiness, and Shaddai, His exhaustless bounty; i.e., the all-bountiful One.

This is the name by which the patriarchs (Gen. 17:1; Ex.6:3) knew God. Sheh-day or Shadday is therefore the all-sufficient God, eternally capable of being all that His people need.   Hopefully that will put some wind in your sail.
